Magellano: A Revolutionary Approach to Lighting Design

Aldo Deli's Award-Winning Lamp Redefines User Interaction and Functionality

Magellano, a unique lamp designed by Aldo Deli, introduces a new level of interaction and functionality to lighting design. Inspired by the concept of a portable torch, this innovative product has been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award for its unique properties and design realization technology.

The design of Magellano is a departure from traditional pendant lamps. Unlike most products on the market, Magellano features moving parts that allow users to adjust not only the distance from the ground but also the type of light it emits. By simply lengthening or shortening the lamp's telescopic structure, users can switch between a diffused light and a more focused beam, offering a level of interaction and customization rarely seen in lighting design.

Magellano's unique properties stem from its simple yet ingenious structure. Composed of three hollow iron-aluminum cylinders of varying diameters, the lamp's telescopic movement is facilitated by cadmium magnets and a plastic membrane. This design ensures a friction that is not excessive for sliding but sufficient to hold the lamp in any position, allowing users to choose any extension length.

The lamp's telescopic movement offers three main configurations: maximum extension, medium extension, and minimum extension. These configurations vary in length and distance from the table, providing flexibility in lighting and aesthetic options. The lamp's performance characteristics include a power of 5 watts, a voltage of 220-240 volts, a color rendering index of 80, and a color temperature of 3500 K.

The design process of Magellano began in May 2018, with the final phases commencing in June of the same year. The project evolved from sketches exploring shapes, dimensions, and internal mechanisms to a 3D printed mock-up that verified dimensional ratios, sliding tolerances, and main finishes. The main challenge was to allow the cylinders to slide effortlessly and stay in place, which was resolved through the use of felt on the surfaces of 3D printed and painted pla.

Magellano is not just a lamp; it's a testament to Aldo Deli's innovative approach to design. The lamp's simple movement of two cylinders, reminiscent of a telescope, combined with the insertion of a light source, results in a product that is innovative in its simplicity. The adjustment of the cylinders allows the user to modulate the light according to their needs, expanding or narrowing the light cone on the plane. Even when not in operation, the product can create a rhythmic decorative apparatus capable of marking the character of a home environment.

Magellano's innovative design and functionality have earned it a Silver A' Design Award in 2019, a prestigious accolade awarded to designs that showcase outstanding expertise and innovation. This recognition is a testament to Aldo Deli's commitment to pushing the boundaries of lighting design, creating products that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and interactive.
